What happens if I bring my car into Hyderabad?
When you move in to Hyderabad, one of the first few things that you will notice are the Police Patrol cars on the roads. The moment they notice your out-of-state number plate, their first tendency is to stop you and check the papers.
Nope, they aren’t interested the registration papers, nor so much the NOC or PUC – they want to see the Road Tax receipt. Now what in God’s name is that?

What is Road Tax?
Well, Road Tax is the tax that you pay to the government of a state to allow you to ply your vehicle on the roads of the state. While the road tax that you paid in your earlier state may have been a meager amount of Rs. 5000 or so, in Andhra Pradesh, the amount is fairly high.
And if you get caught by the traffic police for not having paid that, the penalty is equally high – maybe not so in terms of the money that you have to pay, but in terms of the mental suffering that you go through. The fine that you pay is separate, they may also confiscate your driver’s license and you will be required to go the RTO building to collect it after paying the tax.

Can I get a crash course in paying road tax?
- Paying tax and Registering a Vehicle in Hyderabad are two separate activities.
- You do not need a No Objection Certificate (NOC) to pay the road tax.
- If you bring an outstation vehicle to Hyderabad, you need to pay the road tax within 1 month. After that, you will need to pay a penalty which will be over and above the tax amount.
Documents needed for paying the road tax are:
- The Originals and a single Copy each of:
- Vehicle’s sales invoice (to ascertain the vehicle’s cost at the time of purchase)
- Registration Certificate
- Insurance
- Pollution Under Control (PUC) certificate
- Proof of residence (Ration Card or Rental Agreement)
- 2 demand drafts payable to: Secretary, RTA, Hyderabad
- Rs.75
(processing fees)
- Rs. X (actual tax)
The road tax officials will look at the registration date and the purchase price of the car to decide the amount that you need to pay as tax. For example, if your car is 2 yrs old, it will be about 8% of the purchase amount.
What is the Process to Pay Road Tax?
-
Location: You can Pay the road tax at any RTO near to your house. If you dont know where it is, you can pay it at Khairatabad RTO (Doesn’t matter where you may be staying).
Directions: When you go down from Taj Krishna towards Khairatabad, you will hit a T point, take right from there and immediately on the left hand side is the RTO.
- Time taken: It takes about 2 hours in the whole process. There is an ICICI branch close by (at Khairatabad chourasta), from where you can get the draft done in time. It doesn’t take too long, provided you go early in the day. At the ICICI branch, they don’t make drafts post lunch. You may need to deposit the draft at the RTO before 2 pm. So it’s really kind of a run from the RTO office to the bank and back if you need to get it done in the same day. Otherwise, you can always make a second trip any other day to deposit the draft.
- What you get: They will give you a receipt
of the payment, which you will need to display on a corner of
your windscreen so that the traffic policemen can see it clearly
and not stop you. Even if you don’t display it, keeping
it in the car will suffice as you can show it when asked for.
What About Registration?
As per law, you need to register your vehicle in AP if you are
planning to keep it here for more than 1 year after paying
the road tax. At that time you would need the NOC
from the RTO of the city where you had previously registered the
vehicle. You would need to pay the Registration amount and get an
AP number plate.
Having said that...we have never heard of any instance where the
traffic police stopped a vehicle for not having their number changed
to an Andhra Pradesh number…ever.
We leave that decision up to you. Better be safe than sorry!
Should I approach Agents?
There is not so much corruption in Hyderabad compared to some of the other states. We strongly suggest you not to go to Agents to get your work done.
It is waste of money!
