Be Safe &
Effective
|
| |
| Here
are some tips to be safe and effective while interacting in the
city. Whether you are a traveler or someone who has recently moved,
this section will help you get started. |

Language
The native languages
of Hyderabad include Telugu and Urdu. English and Hindi are not
widely spoken amongst the natives. If you do not speak the local
languages, you may find it a little tough to communicate with the
small time shopkeepers, watchmen, house hold helpers, and other
basic service providers who cater to your day-to-day needs. But
with an increasing number of professionals migrating to Hyderabad
from across the country and the globe, English and Hindi are making
their place.

Clothing and dress
As the Burquah
system in Hyderabad is very prominent owing to the traditional Hyderabadi
Muslim culture, people are not very accepting of scantily dressed
women, though the acceptance levels are undergoing some changes
now. Nevertheless, to avoid any undesirable situations, it is recommended
to be decently dressed, in salwar kameez / saree / full length western
formals or casuals. Don't worry, the burquah isn't a requirement
for you!!
Money
If you are relocating
from another country, owing to exchange rates, what may seem very
meager in your currency could be a sizeable amount in the Indian
rupee. In case you have any doubts about the price/fare that is
being demanded of you, please go ahead and ask for help from the
nearest police man that you see. They are more than willing to help.
Also, please don't get lured by touts and self-proclaimed guides
as they can be a potential threat to your person and belongings.
Food
The food in
Hyderabad is very spicy and not very gentle to your intestines
if you are not used to having hot food. Though the best option
is to cook yourself, it isn't a very practical one always. Make
sure to specify to the waiter, who takes your order, that you
need "No Spices" or "No Chilly". If you say
"Less spicy", trust us, the "less" may actually
turn out to be much more!! But if you are game to experiment,
we wouldn't want to stop you from tasting the culinary delights
of this Nizaami city. Also we strongly suggest you not to experiment
with the "regular" drinking water - Mineral water will
be a life saver.
Pearls
Though
several small shops offering "genuine" pearls at dirt
cheap prices may sound too irresistible, to ensure that you are
not cheated, we would recommend you to make such purchases from
established showrooms only.
